OZ40.
Just over six weeks to go for our big weekend of the OZ40 and the time for members to volunteer their services has arrived. At the next meeting we need everyone to put their hands up to pitch in and help, not just the normal tireless workers. Remember, the more people we get to help on the big day, the less each volunteer will have to do. The committee would also like to take part in activities and enjoy the day as well, not just work!
Sponsors are still needed for the OZ40 Show-n-Shine classes. If you have a business or know someone it will only cost you or them \\$100 for the two trophies. We again have hired the garages at Lakeside for traders to display their goods and these will be hired out at a very reasonable cost. Donations of goods for the progressive raffle are still required.
In the lead up to the OZ40, the club will be having displays at various shopping centres, King George Square and the Super Cheap Auto Parts outlets. Bruce Mudway is organising these displays and need cars and members to give up a Saturday to help promote the big event.
We now have a range of OZ40 memorabilia for pre-sale. We have special bottled port, coffee mugs, key rings, lapel badges, polo shirts, caps, bucket hats and stickers. Get your order in now or buy at the next outing or the next meeting. The prices will increase on the day.
Concessional registration continues to raise its head. I still get calls from members or prospective members inquiring about the “cheap registration”. There seems to be a perception that if you join a car club you get cheap registration for you over 30 year car that you drive to work or uni. This is not the case!
Concessional registration means that you can only use your car for club events, taking it to get serviced or repaired or road testing within a small distance from your home. There are other rules but they are the basics. If you break these you WILL get caught.
The police as well as the Department of Transport now have a squad on the road to check any car that they think may qualify for concessional rego. Many I know have already been pulled up and checked with one getting a \\$1500 fine for using his car outside the guidelines. Remember also that breaking the rules means that you are driving an unregistered vehicle and your insurance would not cover you if you had a prang. Do the right thing and make it easier on those who do!
Mini only racing returns to Lakeside in July. The Historic Racing Car Club has agreed to stage a Mini only race at the Historic Race Meeting on the weekend of 28 & 29 July. This may be the first and last time you have the opportunity to compete in an all Mini feature race at the famous and challenging Lakeside circuit. This is to be a once only event, but if the interest is there, you never know where it may lead. The race will be sponsored by Ken Nelson of Mini Automotive at Ipswich.
If you are a Mini racer from interstate or a Mini racer from the past and still have your car or have access to one and would like to get back into it, give Keith Spark a call on (07) 55220008 or e-mail him at mini33@fan.net.au. There is a full report on the Lakeside 40th Anniversary Meeting by Keith in the Pit Stop section of this mag.
The next club run will be the “Humpy & The Brick Run” on the 13th May. This promises to be a big turnout if the number of cars at our last two events is any indications. Lets show these Holdens just how many Minis we have in the club!
