Friday Night Observation Run.
April 20 2001.

Our first night observation run for the year saw 15 crews turn out to tackle the roads and streets of Brisbane’s western suburbs.

The night started at Wests Rugby League Club car park with a briefing and handing out of the instructions and questions by organizer Glen Carpenter. Once crews signed in it was off to see just how quick one can get lost by taking the wrong turn.

It didn’t take long for one crew, who shall remain nameless, but were driving the club van, took a wrong turn soon after leaving the start and were last seen heading off into the foothills of Mount Coot-tha instead of heading up the mountain.

One crew who should have been favorites when it came to finding the clues around the mountain, proved that after travelling the road for the last 30years does not help one little bit. Bob Ward and his navigator John Heselwood who have worked on the mountain for 55 years between them got all the questions on that leg incorrect. This included not knowing what the sign on the big bin on the channel nine helipad was, despite Bob landing his helicopter beside it every day of the week. They did well on the rest of the run though!

It was amazing seeing Minis heading back and forth along the tiny back streets of Taringa and Chapel Hill with torches flashing in all directions. I was amazed that no one called the police complaining about strange happenings in their normally quiet little street. But, all cars did return and the excuses were interesting to say the least. Some will remember to bring a torch or a pen or a clipboard or a navigator next time.
