Mother’s Day Humpy & Brick Run.
Sunday May 13, 2001.

Can you think of a better way to spend Mother’s Day? Cruising the country roads around the Glasshouse Mountains in a Mini or an early model Holden was the way to go when our club combined with the FX-FJ Holden club for our second annual “Humpy & Brick” run.

25 Minis and 20 Holdens gathered in the peaceful surrounds of Buchanan Park at Burpengary for the briefing and handing out of maps and observation instructions. At 9.30 we hit the roads and headed to Caboolture (I hope they do something better with the traffic lights on Sunday next time) and then through some very picturesque farming communities with the Glasshouse Mountains as a backdrop. Along the way we had a series of questions to test our observation and navigation skills and in some cases our domestic relation skills!!

Our first stop was for morning tea at a well shaded park overlooking the Ewan Maddock Dam at Landsborough. It was a challenge to get everyone on the move again as it was easy to settle in for the day. From here we headed through the little town of Mooloolah and then the historic timber town of Eudlo via an unplanned detour on a dirt road that had just been watered. Not good for those of us who like to have the underneath of their car looking as good as the rest. I swear that it was not there when we did the planning. From here we went through Palmwoods, Woombye, Nambour and on to Bli Bli where we set up shop at Muller Park beside the Maroochy River.

Our Holden club friends fired up the “Chuck Wagon” and soon had lunch served and don’t they have that down to a fine art. Then it was time for a bit of inter-club rivalry with the cam throwing (Mini cam) and the hub cap throwing contests. The Holden members soon got the hang of throwing a Mini camshaft as Michael & Sharee McLennan showed by taking out the championship. The kids also had a lot of fun throwing the hub caps around the park. We all had to keep an eye on our cars after showing them what you can do with hub caps!! But the aim of the day was to have fun and we certainly did that.

Presentation time and it was obvious that Holden drivers have more time enjoy the scenery than Mini drivers as they won all placings in the observation quiz. The winner, Michelle Sorrel only got one question wrong and it wasn’t the one about John Cooper. The winner of the favourite Holden of the day, as voted by Mini club members, went to Warren Clarke with his restored black FJ and the Holden members favourite Mini was Clive & Linda Reedman’s MK2 Cooper S.

We now look forward to next years event which we hold on the third Sunday of May and let Mother have her day to herself.
